WiseStamp – Dynamic Signature Everywhere

WiseStamp’s Firefox extension attempts to enhance the user experience in web-based email services with dynamic signatures. Last year, the Israeli developer of this extension won the first place in Mashable’s Open Awards competition in the category for social media extensions.

This WiseStamp extension turns the signature area into a dynamic zone where personal or promotional content can be exposed. Users of Yahoo!, Hotmail, Gmail and others can enjoy creating a “personal signature” that includes links to blogs, Flickr accounts, IM accounts, social media profiles and more.
The idea of a personal signature isn’t new. Email signatures exist in old web clients as well as up to date popular web clients. Signatures are widely used in business email rather than personal ones. WiseStamp brings dynamic content to this zone, especially from social networks. This way, readers of letters will be exposed to the sender’s social media activities. You can switch between two different signature types. For example, various promotional content for business emails and famous quotes for personal ones.
After a quick and standard FireFox installation, you’ll see a screen with instructions for using WiseStamp. A small brown signature icon in the status bar will enable switching between different signature profiles, change of settings and signature editing options.
The main advantage appears under the “Social” tab. Apart from putting links to Flickr, Facebook, LinkedIm, Twitter and Instant Messaging Services, there’s an option to link to a dynamic RSS feed. This means adding dynamic content from blogs or social media feeds. The signature is updated automatically for every letter that is sent.
The editor is simple and straightforward. Creating a signature, either by using a preset template or from scratch doesn’t take a long time. The downside for this sophisticated service is that when in a rush, you can find yourself sending an important business email with a quote from The Dude. A correlation between social media activity and every email isn’t always needed.
It seems that the target audience of this service is for people that already use email signatures frequently. On the other hand, WiseStamp’s ambitious attempt to connect between the old and trusted email service and the young and hip social media services might eventually succeed.
