Israel’s PrimeSense supplies 3D-sensing technology to ‘Project Natal’ for Xbox 360

Microsoft Corp. and PrimeSense, supplier of 3D sensing and recognition technologies, announced today that PrimeSense will be providing its 3D-sensing technology for use in “Project Natal” for Xbox 360.

Project Natal is the code name for a controller-free gaming and entertainment experience by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 console. Based on an add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller through a natural user interface using gestures, spoken commands, or presented objects and images.

PrimeSense’s sensing and recognition technologies enables consumer devices to “see” environments and allows them to control and interact naturally with those devices in a simple and intuitive way.

“PrimeSense has delivered an important component to the technology, helping us deliver revolutionary controller-free entertainment experiences in the living room.”, said Ilan Spillinger, vice president of Xbox 360 hardware.

Xbox 360 Hardware Engineering teams developed the ‘Project Natal’ sensor based on the PrimeSensor reference design to support the special requirements of ‘Project Natal’.

Microsoft recently announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that “Project Natal” will be available during holiday 2010.
