Blabbers: Add a personal touch to any site

Blabbers is a combination browser extension/addon and Facebook/twitter application that wants to change the way we regurgitate content on the web. The internet has been bringing out the curator in us for quite a while. We see something nice and immediately want to share it with everyone we know. The advent of the social web has allowed us to share everything with everyone. Blabber is not presenting us with new ways to share content, instead it allows us to personalize the content we share and add our own two cents while we’re at it.

Let’s say I run into an remarkable webpage and want to share it with my friends on Facebook. I provide Facebook with a link and some descriptive text. Once you choose to check out my recommendation you are on your own. At the end of the proccess you can go back to my recommendation and comment on it, telling me how awfully boring you found the site. This is where Blabbers comes in.

Blabbers allows you to add comments, doodles, clipart and whole bunch of other stuff to the actual page you want to share, and then let’s you invite your friends on Facebook or Twitter to see it. Here’s an example of a Google’s homepage after I Blabbered it a little.

Cool right? At the end of the Blabbering process the application provides you with a link to your blabber enhanced page. I initally had some problems viewing the Blabbered pages on other computers, but this hasn’t proved to be a problem anymore.

Installation was smooth but required bypassing two efforts to change my default search engine provider. Keep in mind that the setup process requires two leaps of faith, the first is the installation while the second is when you are requested to grant the Blabbers Facebook application, permission to access you’re information even if you are not using the application. Once installed the nifty tool palette took some time getting used to, yet produced satisfactory, and fun results in a matter of minutes. I played around with Blabber and was impressed by my new ability to add remarks, doodles, and high lite areas on the screen of every page I looked at. I found small differences in the way the Blabbers were presented on different browsers.

According to Blabbers, several business models are being considered by the company, among them are premium services, and traffic based ad revenue. Blabbers plans to launch a premium service soon that will target publishers and organizational social networks. The now public user beta was launched last month with the help of a Facebook oriented campaign and an ipad as a prize for the most creative Blabbers.

Blabbers is definitely a step in the right direction as it fills an open void in the world of content sharing. The feeling the application creates is reminiscent of the smiley icon fad but seems to hold more promise. I was left with a keen desire to show this cool tool to as many friends as possible.
